Under the Same Roof: international premiere in Drama
On the Day of the Bulgarian Independence the short film Under the Same Roof directed by Simeon Tsonchev meets the audience for the very first time on screen at the 43rd Drama International Short Film Festival. From more than 2 000 entries only 35 made it to the international competition and Under the Same Roof is the only Bulgarian title. The audience can enjoy the film in person on the 22nd of September at 17:30 in Olympia Cinema and on 24th of September at 22:30 in the Municipal Conservatory, but also online on the festival’s platform, available only from the territory of Greece. This year, one of the international jury’s members is the famous Oscar-nominated Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski and the voting for the audience’s award will be possible not only in the cinemas, but also online. The premiere of Under the Same Roof in Bulgaria is yet to happen, but because of the strict COVID-19 restrictions, a date has not been announced so far.
Here is what the director Simeon Tsonchev shared about the film:
Every human is different and sometimes what one likes makes the other one angry. But can we overcome our differences and learn to live together? This question triggered my interest to film Under the Same Roof when I read the script of my friend Christos Zacharakis many years ago. It struck me that loneliness is the colossal problem which the characters have to face every day. It is the catalyst moving the story forward. The ingenuity we demonstrate in our desire to chase away dark thoughts often leads us to some form of enlightenment. I believe those are the exact moments where we change inside, grow up and become better people…
A year ago, I came to Greece with a friend of mine in search of a man for one of the main roles – that of the bouzouki musician. And I was very lucky to meet just the right person – Panagiotis Chronis. He brought to the film the genuineness of emotions found in the songs of the great rebetiko composers Apostolos Chatzichristos, Kostas Skarvelis and Markos Vamvakaris. I am very exited because the audience of my beloved Drama Film Festival will meet not only him, but also some of my favourite Bulgarian actors – Nikola Dodov, Iva Todorova and Alexander Goncharov.
The best of luck to #DISFF43!
